Nano Beauty Under the Microscope: What Consumers Should Know

In the pursuit of flawless skin and longer-lasting makeup, the beauty industry has gone microscopic- literally. Enter nanoparticles- those super-tiny particles that are making waves in modern cosmetics, promising enhanced absorption and impressive results. Nanomaterials have been used in medical and health sciences, but today we're looking into your personal care stash.
Being a relatively new phenomenon, regulations around the use of nanomaterials are still emerging, as is the evidence of their toxicity. While it is undeniable that nanomaterials have contributed significantly to scientific advancements, there are numerous unanswered questions about their safety for both individuals and the environment. Although we're still learning about the evidence, nanoparticles are already widely used in products you encounter every day, so let's explore what we do know.
What are Nanoparticles?

Nanoparticles are extremely small particles, typically defined as being smaller than 100 nanometers. To put this in perspective, human hair is usually around 100,000 nanometers thick. These tiny particles possess unique properties that allow for significant enhancements in various applications, particularly in cosmetics. Some ingredients might be used in their original size, while other products might include those same ingredients in a nano-form (imagine "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids"). Nanoparticles improve product absorption, provide a more even color, create a smoother texture, and help ingredients remain stable for longer. Here are some examples of where you might already be encountering nanoparticles :
In eyeshadows, their light-reflecting properties create a soft, shimmering or “pearlescent” glow.
Nano Titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, and silica are often used in products like sunscreens, anti-aging creams, and foundations. These ingredients are favored for their ability to provide better UV protection and smoother application without leaving a white residue.
Foundations that contain nano zinc oxide and silicon dioxide help trap enzymes responsible for dry, rough skin, resulting in a smoother finish.

Health Concerns: Are Nanoparticles Safe?
Although nanoparticles are often marketed for their benefits, there are valid health concerns.
Research has shown that some nanoparticles can enter the bloodstream, trigger inflammatory responses and oxidative stress in skin cells, potentially leading to skin issues and accelerated aging, which is the opposite effect we're hoping for when using cosmetic products. Animal studies have shown that exposure to nanoparticles can cause lung inflammation, fibrosis, and even tumors.
While more concerning research is emerging, there are still significant gaps in our understanding, and we need a better understanding of how they affect human health, including the differences between various types and chemical compositions of particles, their sizes, and the methods of exposure—whether through inhalation, ingestion, or absorption.
Similarly to what we've discussed, nanoparticles could have some benefits to the environment, such as water purification and soil nourishment, but the release of nanoparticles into air, water, or soil during manufacturing, use, or disposal can have repercussions on ecosystems. More research is needed to fully understand what that means on a bigger scale but what we know so far is concerning.
How to Avoid Nanoparticles in Cosmetics
If you are concerned about the possible effects of nanoparticles, you can take several steps to avoid them in your cosmetics. Here are some practical tips:
Read ingredient labels: Educate yourself on common nanoparticle ingredients such as titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. Look for “non-nano” on product labels when making purchases (e.g., Non-Nano Zinc Oxide).
Opt for natural alternatives: Choose products that focus on natural and organic ingredients, as they often avoid using nanoparticles. Brands committed to cruelty-free practices typically prioritize safer formulations.
Investigate the brands you are purchasing from: some brands state in their ethos whether nanomaterials (or other toxins) are used in their products.
To make informed choices, spend some time researching brands. Many companies now emphasize ingredient transparency and provide detailed information on their websites. Staying updated on scientific findings concerning nanoparticles will also empower you to understand their risks better.
By staying informed, carefully reading labels, and advocating for transparency and improved regulations, consumers can navigate the nano debate with more confidence.
